Trump announces ‘major statement’ on Russia
In an interview with NBC News on Thursday, Trump expressed disappointment in Russia but hinted that developments could change soon. “I think I will have a major statement to make on Russia on Monday,” he said without providing further details.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the ASEAN forum in Malaysia, where Rubio said they discussed “new and different” ideas for resolving the Ukraine conflict. When asked about the talks, Lavrov coyly responded, “As if I would tell you,” mimicking Trump’s style.
Trump also mentioned pending Senate legislation, led by hawkish Senator Lindsey Graham, that would impose a 500% tariff on countries importing Russian energy and goods in hopes of pressuring Moscow to compromise on Ukraine. However, Trump noted that he has the authority to delay the tariff for up to 180 days.
Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov said Moscow is prepared to adapt if the US enacts these steep secondary tariffs and vowed to continue following its independent course. “We know how to work in these conditions,” he said.
