Russia Dispatches Humanitarian Aid to Quake-Hit Afghanistan
According to a statement released late Sunday by Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry, the relief supplies were sent under orders from President Vladimir Putin. The ministry confirmed the arrival of the aid early Monday.
“On board are more than 20 tons of tents and blankets for the population affected by the devastating earthquake,” the statement said.
The initial earthquake struck on August 31, claiming over 2,200 lives and injuring approximately 4,000 in Afghanistan’s eastern Kunar province. The disaster severely damaged infrastructure and homes across the region.
Following this, a series of aftershocks have worsened conditions, driving up the death toll and complicating rescue missions in the remote, mountainous terrain. Search and rescue operations remain active, with numerous individuals still feared buried beneath rubble.
Last week, Russia delivered an initial shipment to Kabul, consisting of 20 tons of food aid.
