Russian Foreign Minister Voices Support for Venezuela in Phone Call

(MENAFN) Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov conducted a telephone discussion with Venezuelan Executive Vice President Delcy Rodriguez on Saturday, conveying Moscow's unwavering support for the South American nation amid American military aggression.

The exchange occurred shortly after U.S. President Donald Trump revealed that large-scale strikes on Venezuela enabled American special operations forces to capture and remove the country's leader, Nicolas Maduro, from Venezuelan territory.

"Lavrov expressed firm solidarity with the Venezuelan people in the face of armed aggression," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement, adding that Moscow will continue to support Venezuela's policy of defending the country's sovereignty and national interests.

Lavrov and Rodriguez "expressed their support for preventing further escalation and for finding a way out of the situation through dialogue," the ministry said. Both nations reaffirmed their dedication to strengthening the Russia-Venezuela strategic partnership framework.

According to Venezuela's Constitution, Rodriguez assumes presidential authority if the incumbent becomes unable to discharge official responsibilities. Yet Trump emphasized American involvement in determining Venezuela's next governance structure for the oil-abundant nation.

"We can't take a chance on letting somebody else run and just take over where [Maduro] left off," he told Fox News in a phone interview on Saturday. "So we're making that decision now."

Washington has consistently maintained the Venezuelan president lacks legitimacy, previously offering a $50 million reward for intelligence leading to his apprehension.

The U.S. Department of Justice has now charged Maduro, his wife, and his son with allegedly commandeering Venezuela and its governmental apparatus "to transport thousands of tons of cocaine" into American territory.

Moscow has demanded Washington release the detained president and his spouse immediately.

"We emphasize the need to create conditions for resolving any existing issues between the United States and Venezuela through dialogue," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
