French Authorities Free Captain of Suspected Russian Oil Tanker

(MENAFN) French authorities have released the captain of an oil tanker suspected of being part of Russia’s so-called shadow fleet, officials said on Wednesday.

The Marseille prosecutor’s office confirmed that the 58-year-old Indian captain of the vessel, named Grinch, was freed from custody on Monday, according to reports. He had been detained on Saturday evening over allegations of flying a false flag after the French navy boarded the tanker the previous Thursday.

“The investigations, carried out by the maritime gendarmerie under the authority of the Marseille public prosecutor’s office, are ongoing,” the office said in a statement.

French President Emmanuel Macron had announced last Thursday that the navy had boarded the tanker on the high seas in the Mediterranean. The vessel, traveling from Russia, was suspected of violating international sanctions.

“We will not tolerate any violation. This morning, the French Navy boarded an oil tanker coming from Russia, subject to international sanctions and suspected of flying a false flag,” Macron wrote on US social media company X.
