Russia, Ukraine Complete Another Exchange of Fallen Soldiers' Bodies

(MENAFN) Russia and Ukraine confirmed Thursday they finalized another transfer of deceased military personnel under agreements brokered earlier this year in Istanbul.

Russian presidential adviser Vladimir Medinsky announced via Telegram that 1,000 bodies of fallen soldiers were delivered to Ukraine, while 38 were received in exchange.

"Within the framework of the Istanbul agreements, the bodies of 1,000 dead Ukrainian soldiers have been transferred to Ukraine. The bodies of 38 dead Russian soldiers have been transferred to Russia," he stated.

Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed the operation in its own statement, verifying receipt of 1,000 service members' remains.

"Repatriation events took place today, as part of which one thousand bodies were returned to Ukraine," the headquarters posted on Telegram.

On Dec. 30, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin reported that roughly 2,300 Russian servicemen and approximately 170 civilians were repatriated from Ukraine this year through prisoner of war protocols established in Istanbul.

Galuzin additionally referenced fallen soldiers' remains exchanges, asserting Russia transferred about 12,000 bodies to the Ukrainian side and received around 200 from Ukraine last year.

The previous exchange of this nature occurred on Dec. 19 of last year.
