Zelenskyy Signals Third Round of Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks
During a phone conversation with a news agency on Tuesday, Zelenskyy indicated that the upcoming discussions are “slated for Tuesday or Wednesday,” although the outlet pointed out that it remains “unclear whether Russia would agree to talks in the US.”
The report stated that a US initiative to establish a free economic zone in the Donbas region—intended to serve as a buffer area between Russia and Ukraine—is expected to be included on the agenda. However, Zelenskyy noted that both Kyiv and Moscow approach the proposal cautiously.
“None of the sides is keen on the idea of the free economic zone — neither the Russians, nor us,” the Ukrainian leader was quoted as saying.
He further explained, “We have different views on it. And agreements were as follows — let’s come back with the vision of what it may look like for the next meeting,” highlighting the differing perspectives and the plan to revisit the concept with more detailed proposals at the subsequent session.
These statements follow two previous rounds of trilateral negotiations involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States, which were conducted in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, on Jan. 23-24 and Feb. 4-5. After the second meeting, Moscow and Kyiv completed their first prisoner swap since October of the previous year.
Addressing the Abu Dhabi discussions, Zelenskyy informed reporters last week that Washington had suggested hosting a direct meeting between Russian and Ukrainian delegations for the first time. He specified that the gathering would occur “probably in Miami, in a week.”
