Russia, Ukraine Conduct Exchange of Fallen Soldiers' Remains

(MENAFN) Russia and Ukraine have completed a fresh exchange of fallen soldiers' remains, Vladimir Medinsky, head of Russia's negotiation delegation, confirmed Thursday.

"Ukraine has been handed over the bodies of 1,000 fallen Ukrainian soldiers. Russia has received the bodies of 35 fallen Russian warriors," Medinsky wrote on Telegram.

The latest handover marks a continued, if asymmetric, effort by both sides to repatriate the dead amid an ongoing conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives. The previous exchange, conducted on Jan. 29, saw Moscow return 1,000 bodies to Kyiv, while receiving 38 of its own fallen soldiers in return.

Medinsky noted that the January transfer was carried out in accordance with the 2025 Istanbul agreements — a framework that has quietly underpinned several such exchanges.

Beyond the return of remains, Moscow and Kyiv have also pursued repeated prisoner-of-war swaps since hostilities began, with both the UAE and the US playing key mediating roles. Russian Human Rights Commissioner Tatyana Moskalkova said that more than 1,800 Russian servicemen were returned from Ukrainian captivity through such exchanges over the course of 2025.

The exchanges represent one of the few areas of practical cooperation between the two warring nations, even as broader peace efforts remain elusive.
