Bangladesh Appeals to US for Russian Fuel Imports Amid Mideast Tensions
The request was raised during a meeting on Wednesday between Bangladesh’s Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and the US ambassador to the country. The discussion took place at the Planning Ministry in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka.
After the meeting, Chowdhury told reporters that receiving such permission could provide substantial economic relief for Bangladesh as the country navigates the ongoing global energy crisis. According to reports, the US ambassador indicated that the proposal would be conveyed to officials in Washington for review.
Energy security was a central topic during the talks, with both sides examining the instability affecting worldwide oil and gas supplies. The minister explained that the conversation also included broader efforts to deepen cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States in areas such as trade, investment, and economic growth.
Global energy markets have faced increasing uncertainty as conflicts in the Middle East intensify. Reports state that the situation worsened after a joint strike by the United States and Israel against Iran on Feb. 28, which prompted retaliatory moves by Tehran.
The tensions have disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for global oil transport. According to reports, interruptions along this route have slowed or reduced deliveries of energy from countries in the Persian Gulf, contributing to volatility in international fuel markets.
At the same time, restrictions placed on Russia following its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 continue to influence worldwide oil trading patterns, further complicating the global energy landscape.
