Russia Expands Sanctions List to Include Five British Nationals

(MENAFN) Russia has imposed entry restrictions on five British citizens, citing what it described as hostile actions by the United Kingdom, the spread of misinformation and continued support for Ukraine in its conflict with Moscow.

In a statement issued Tuesday, Russian authorities said the move was a response to policies pursued by London, which Moscow accuses of encouraging confrontation and providing extensive political and military backing to the government of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to the statement, Russia called on the British government to abandon what it characterized as anti-Russian policies and reconsider its support for Kyiv. Russian officials argued that continued military assistance contributes to further casualties and prolongs the conflict.

The newly announced sanctions target a group of individuals whom Moscow claims have played roles in promoting what it considers misleading information about Russia or supporting initiatives linked to Ukraine.

Among those added to the blacklist are journalists Catherine Belton and Richard Holmes, as well as Alexander Browder, who has been identified in reports as an analyst focusing on corruption and financial crime issues.

The sanctions also extend to Alice Laugher, chief executive of the organization Committed to Good (CTG), and Nicholas Westbury, one of the founders of the company's parent organization. Russian officials alleged that organizations connected to the individuals have been involved in activities that support Ukraine under humanitarian or development-related frameworks.

Moscow indicated that further retaliatory measures could follow if relations with the United Kingdom continue to deteriorate. In its statement, the Foreign Ministry warned: “We warn that any efforts by British political elites to further fuel Russophobia, deliberately damage our country’s international reputation, and accelerate the anti-Russian sanctions will inevitably be met with a decisive response.”

Relations between Russia and the United Kingdom have remained highly strained throughout the conflict in Ukraine. London has been among Kyiv's most prominent international supporters, providing military assistance, financial aid and diplomatic backing while encouraging broader international support for Ukraine.

The latest sanctions announcement reflects the continuing diplomatic confrontation between Moscow and Western governments, with both sides maintaining restrictive measures and exchanging criticism over the course of the conflict.
